Brahea Armata - Click to enlargeDescription Its large, tough blue palms make this palm easily recognizable: they are of a silvery, metallic blue, sometimes almost white. They are in fact covered with a thin layer of wax, protecting the palms against solar heat.
The flower stalks can reach an amazing length of 6 meters (18 feet); they lean spectacularly towards the ground.
This blue palm grows slowly at first (it takes its trunk several years to take shape), then it grows faster, and reaches 12 to 15 meters of height (36 to 45 feet).

Culture Don't keep it too long in a container, and place it in full sun, in a well-drained soil, and water it regularly in summer only. Avoid spreading water on its palms, it would damage its unique colouring.

Story corner It is also called 'the zinc palm', for its colour and the stiffness of its palms (in the wind, they produce a metallic sound).
