One of our Chamaerops humilis, 10-litre pot
Common names Dwarf palm, Mediterranean palm, false Doum, Phoenix humilis
Origin It grows naturally in the west of the Mediterranean area (Spain, Italian coasts, Portugal, Tunisia, Algeria, ...), and is the northernmost palm: you can find it in France, in the wild, up to 44° North. It is one of only two European palms, along with Phoenix theophrastii.
Cold-hardiness
Leaves are damaged by low temepratures (around -10, -12°C [14 to 10°F]),
but some plants can withstand -15°C [5°F] without any damage.
Description A small, quite fast-growing palm: adult plants can reach 3 to 4 meters. Suckers quickly appear at the base of the trunk, forming clumps. Don't pluck them out, they will form the rounded shape you can see in the photo.
Chamaerops Humilis is quite commonly grown in France, along with Trachycarpus fortunei; it can have different forms and colours, depending on the cultivar : Chamaerops humilis 'cerifera', with blue leaves, Chamaerops humilis 'Vulcano', a small compact palm with tough leaves, Chamaerops humilis 'glauca', Chamaerops humilis 'microcarpa', Chamaerops humilis 'tomentosa', ...
Culture Keep it in a patio container, or place it in the ground, in full sun. It is wind-, draught-, heat, and cold-resistant, and can even grow in coastal, salty areas. However, it doesn't appreciate too much humidity, and likes good drainage.
